U.P.C. Version E (U.P.C.-E)
Universal Product Code (U.P.C.)

In the Universal Product Code (U.P.C.) system, certain values of the 12-digit number can be represented by a short version symbol---the version E or U.P.C.-E. This is achieved by the suppression of zeros in the symbol, thus the U.P.C.-E is also known as Zero-Suppression. Only number system character "0" (zero) can be represented by Zero-Suppression symbol.

When the full-length number contains several zeros in a particular position, these zeros are omitted from the number, and the scanner is programmed to reinstate the zeros when reading the symbol.

A U.P.C.-E symbol consists of some digits taken from the manufacturer's number and some from the item number.

The number system character (NSC) and check digit (modulo check character) are not included in the symbol.

There are four sets of guidelines for formatting a U.P.C.-E symbol (please see Formatting U.P.C.-E Symbol below). For example, a U.P.C.-E symbol with code number 67100-00898 in number system character "0". First, compute the check digit (modulo check character) following the algorithm in the U.P.C.-A Check Digit Calculation:

Then, select the parity combination from the U.P.C.-E Parity Pattern below, which is EOOEEO for check digit "5". Finally, use this parity pattern and the decision rules in formatting U.P.C.-E symbol, in which the code number 67100-00898 has a manufacturer's number ending in "100", and we have the resulting symbol on next page, which is:

E represents Even Parity
O represents Odd Parity

Universal Product Code (U.P.C.)

There is no explicit character encodation for the check digit (modulo check character) in the U.P.C.-E symbol. The value of the check digit is derived from the parity permutation of the six encoded characters.

The six explicit characters are derived from the U.P.C. code as follows:
